Frank Lloyd Wright and Light Screens

Frank Lloyd Wright is probably most well known for his immaculate Prairie-styled architecture.  Though his genius and creativity didn't stop there.  Along with the architectural element, he meticulously designed everything from the textiles, furniture, light fixtures, cabinetry, etc.  In one case, he even designed the clothing of the person who was to live in the house he built.

One of the most interesting things about the architectural work of Frank Lloyd Wright is his integration and use of windows as a design element. Although many refer to his use of glass as art glass or stained glass, he prefers to use the term "Light Screens".  Windows weren't designed to obstruct a persons view, but to to tie-in the natural world with the living space.

  2. I love this lesson! 1. I really liked the bio video on Frank Loyd Wright. One thing that is huge to point out to the kids is that his major was Engineering. So often when kids think they are good at art they do not think they can pursue a career in the Math and Science fields. I just went to a Conference session discussing the push for STREAM instead of STEM education. STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, ART and Mathematics. This emphasis on the ARTS is crucial for today careers in STEM jobs! I feel very inspired by your post and will probably use Mr. Wright in my classroom as well! THANK YOU!

  3. Frank Lloyd Wright was a genius! A little eccentric but I suppose the greats usually are. His light screens were quite beautiful and did a fantastic job at tying in his structures with nature. The videos you shared were very informative. Nice post!
