Color Variations of Blenko Glass

Read this link on the color variations used in Blenko glass.  Next choose 2 pieces from either in-class pieces or from the online Blenko Gallery.  In your post, identify which piece you chose, which color variation you believe it is, and what metal oxide was possibly used to create the color (This will require you to research various chemical compounds used to create color in glass).

Blenko Molds

Blenko Molds from Mike Krenzel on Vimeo.

In addition to ways molds are prepared, cast iron molds must be heated before they are used to make glass.  As seen below, a gas line is run to a special cart holding the mold.  It is heated, then wheeled to the station in which it will be used.

The art of glass making in West Virginia is slowly fading away.  At one time, over 450 glass factories existed in our state alone.  Your assignment is to help revitalize the art by designing new pieces that will attract new customers and a way to advertise your work.

1.  Your first piece needs exhibit the characteristic of symmetry.  Watch the this tutorial on how to create a 3-dimentional, symmetrical drawing of an object.  Once your drawing is complete, chose a color for your piece and color it accordingly.  On the back of your work, list the basic ingredients for the glass you would need to create your piece. Post a picture of your work using the iPad in the Symmetrical Glass Design gallery.  Tag your photo with your name, ingredients needed, what type of mold would be used (wooden or cast iron), and the name of your design.

2. Take a look this classic ad for Hazel Atlas.   How will you draw your new customers in?  How can you liven up your ad?  Use Microsoft Word or Publisher to create an advertisement for your new piece.

Part II

1.  Divide yourselves into groups of 2 or 3 and review the following website regarding the use of safety glass in schools.  When you are done, explore your school and make observations of the glass you find around the school, the type of glass (if you can identify it), its location, etc.  Record your findings on the Ipad.  Once each group has made a pass through the building, discuss your findings as a class.  Are there any similarities in your observations? Does everything seem correct or do you have concerns regarding your findings? (If there are concerns, please proceed to question 2)

2.  As a class, write an email to the Cabell County Safety Manager, Tim Stewart, regarding your findings and concerns relating to current safety codes.

Part I

Think about the information presented in the PowerPoint and how it relates to the glass used in your everyday life.  Is the application of its use adequate in regards to the safety of yourself and family?  Are there any instances or places where you think another type of glass would be more appropriate? If so, why?
